The very two of the finest and cutting-edge European tenor saxophonists can be no doubt Daniele Scannapieco from Salerno and here comes Roman Max Ionata. His latest live album Tenor Legacy (2008, Picanto Records) with Scannapieco has been already well reputed among the most attentive critics and enthusiasts in the world, but never does exhaust Ionta’s vigorous musicianship and affluent creativity.
Here he shows up his leadership and courage to put them into an another great new work, where he stands with his most trusted and talented Italian musicians, Luca Mannutza on piano, Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet and his regular rhythm section. With the appearance of “Groove Master” GeGè Telesforo, with which Ionata has often toured and gigged on stage in these years, we can find so many facets of Ionata that have never been entirely revealed before in any other recordings, from be-bop to today’s Italian Neo-Hard Bop, fine modal waltz tunes, funk and also his great adoration of Brazilian music. Without any doubt his maturity promises him to enter the Hall of Fame as well as all the historical jazz giants.
