«スイスのトランペッターとイタリアのピアニスト／コンポーザーによる今回のレコーディングは、ヨーロッパ・ジャズの2人の主役となる彼らにとって、スモール・グループでの初の共演ということになる。かつて、イントラ率いるチーヴィカ・ジャズ・バンドにアンブロゼッティが参加したことはあったが、今回はそれとは大きく異なる。本作では今回のために書き起こされた新曲とスタンダード数曲を通して、濃密かつ明快な音楽を、50年代から活躍するピアニストによるレギュラー・トリオ、トランペットとピアノのデュオによる親密な対話、機動力溢れる全員参加のクァルテットを通して耳にすることができる。高い次元の詩的コンテンツは、ジャズの特徴である「関係性」を高め、お互いのサウンドに耳を傾けることによって激しいインタープレイを生み出す。ミュージシャンごとにアプローチの手法こそ違えども、いずれもジャズの言語を用いたヨーロッパのそれである。
アンブロゼッティは、叙情性、そして力強いリズムを基調に50〜60年代の偉大なるアメリカのトランペット・マナーの伝統を再現し、それらを語法のなかに取り入れる。ダークなトーン、ときに明るいメロディのなかに溶け込む、切れ味の良いスウィング感をもってである。それはまさしくマイルズ・デイヴィスがこのスイスのジャズ奏者について触れながら強調したトランペット・マナー、つまり「ジャズの黒い原型」に関わるものである。
一方のイントラは、ヨーロッパのジャズ美学に基づき、ヨーロッパ教養に由来するエレメントを提示する。色彩豊かな作曲技法、卓越したピアノ・タッチ。しかしその一方で決してスウィング感、アフロ・アメリカンなジャズ感覚を失わない。これこそがまさにイントラが他のヨーロッパのミュージシャンと異なる点であり、彼の偉大なるオリジナリティなのである。
またトニー・アルコ (ds)、ベースのルーチョ・テルツァーノ (b）が聴かせる、豊かなイントネーション、完成度の高いリズム・ライン、インプロヴィゼーションに基づく対話感覚。これらは、強烈な2つの異なるパーソナリティを持つミュージシャン、イントラとアンブロゼッティの邂逅には欠かすことのできない柔軟な基礎要素となっている。»　マウリーツィオ・フランコ



L'incontro discografico tra il trombettista svizzero e il pianista e compositore italiano è il primo esempio di collaborazione organica, all'interno di un piccolo gruppo, tra due protagonisti del jazz europeo. C'erano state, in precedenza, partecipazioni orchestrali di Ambrosetti con la Civica Jazz Band di Intra, ma stavolta la situazione era completamente diversa. Con nuove composizioni (scritte per l'occasione) e splendidi evergreen, la musica trova in questo album una dimensione raccolta e al tempo stesso incisiva, articolandosi nella dimensione del trio, organico prediletto dal pianista sin dagli anni '50, nel più intimo dialogo del duo tromba e pianoforte, nel trainante e coinvolgente gioco del quartetto al completo. Un incontro di alto contenuto poetico, che esalta la natura relazionale del jazz, l'ascolto reciproco che produce un intenso interplay anche tra musicisti con un approccio differente, da europei, alla lingua jazzistica. Da una parte, Ambrosetti riprende in una chiave lirica e fortemente ritmica la grande tradizione del trombettismo americano degli anni '50 e '60, portandola all'interno di un linguaggio dai toni scuri, dallo swing tagliente che, all'occasione, sa stemperarsi in un solare gioco melodico. Un trombettismo, come sottolineava Miles Davis parlando proprio del jazzista svizzero, legato alla matrice nera del jazz. Dall'altra parte, Enrico Intra coniuga all'europea l'estetica jazzistica, vi porta elementi provenienti dal mondo euro colto, sia sul piano compositivo e coloristico sia nel sublime tocco pianistico, ma senza perdere mai, in nessun momento, il senso dello swing e la consapevolezza della linea afroamericana del jazz; in questo sta la sua differenza da tanti altri musicisti europei e la sua grande originalità. Insieme ai due protagonisti, la batteria di Tony Arco e il contrabbasso di Lucio Terzano svelano una ricchezza di accenti, una completezza di tratto, un senso del dialogo collettivo che sono alla radice di una duttilità indispensabile per dare equilibrio all'incontro tra due forti, e differenti personalità, quali Intra e Ambrosetti.　Maurizio Franco


This is the very first organic collaboration by the Swiss trumpeter and the Italian pianist / composer, two of the greatest musicians in European jazz scene, in such a small combo. Once before, Ambrosetti had participated in Orchestra of "Civica Jazz Band" directed by Intra, but this time the situation was completely different. With newly written compositions and some splendid evergreen standard songs, the music in this album shows us a rich and sharp dimension, through the trio directed by the pianist who have played from 50's, the sincere dialog of duet by trumpet and piano, and finally the quartet.
The meeting with highly poetic contents, which raises a relational nature of jazz, by listening to each other, that produces an intense interplay, also among the different musicians with different approach, but always by the Europeans, with the language of jazz.
One side, Ambrosetti take the great tradition of American trumpet manner in '50-'60 into the lyrical and strongly rhythmic key, with bringing it in whole language by his dark tone and sharp swing feel. The trumpet manner that Miles Davis emphasized with notice to this Swiss trumpeter, related with "black matrix of jazz".
On the other side, Enrico Intra rooted on European esthetics of jazz, shows us some elements come from European cultural world, both compositions and his excellent piano touch, without never loosing swing and afro-american jazz feelings: this is the very point that distinguishes him from the other European musicians, in conclusion his great originality.
Together with 2 greatest main performers, Tony Arco (ds) and Lucio Terzano (b) reveal their rich accent, the complete strokes, collective dialogs which can be an indispensable element in order to give an equilibrium to this meeting of two strong and different personalities, Intra and Ambrosetti.　Maurizio Franco
